Marry in Secret
Marry in Secret by Anne Gracie is $1.99! This is the third book in the Marriage of Convenience series. Catherine gave this one a B:
On balance, then, I think this book ends up as a B. It’s not the festival of squee that denotes an A, or the ‘perfectly good but a bit meh’ that denotes a C.
A rugged and ruined naval officer comes to claim his bride in an unforgettable tale of love, revenge and redemption from the national bestselling author of Marry in Scandal.
Lady Rose Rutherford—rebel, heiress, and exasperated target of the town’s hungry bachelors—has a plan to gain the freedom she so desperately desires: she will enter into a marriage of convenience with the biggest prize on the London marriage mart.
There’s just one problem: the fierce-looking man who crashes her wedding to the Duke of Everingham — Thomas Beresford, the young naval officer she fell in love with and secretly married when she was still a schoolgirl. Thought to have died four years ago he’s returned, a cold, tough stranger with one driving purpose—revenge.
Embittered by betrayal and hungry for vengeance, Thomas will stop at nothing to reclaim his rightful place, even whether that means using Rose—and her fortune—to do it. But Rose never did follow the rules, and as she takes things into her own unpredictable hands, Thomas finds himself in an unforeseen and infuriating predicament: he’s falling in love with his wife…
Not good Influence
Poor Influence by Stefanie London is $1.99! This is the third and last book in the Bad Bachelors series. For me, the series started off strong, but I was meh on book two and liked this one a smidge better than that one.
Annie Maxwell had her whole life figured out…until her fiancé left her when his career took off. Whether that wasn’t not good enough, every society blog posted pictures of him escorting a woman wearing her wedding ring. Outside his stellar career, CEO Joe Preston has made a lot of mistakes. None was worse than leaving the love of his life when she needed him most. Now, he’s ready for a moment chance. He may still be one heck of a poor influence, but when Annie’s safety is threatened by a hacker, Joe is the only one who can save her—and he’ll do whatever it takes to win her back. But will their hard-won bond survive the revelation that Annie is the one pulling the strings Backside naughty Bachelors?
The Ones Who Got Away
RECOMMENDED: The Ones Who Got Away by Roni Loren is $1.99! I really enjoyed this one and its portrayal of people living with trauma. I gave it a B+, but as it deals with victims of gun violence, I totally understand why readers may want to avoid it.
Provided the subject matter doesn’t scare you off and your catnip is friends to lovers, slow burn-y goodness, The Ones Who Got Absent is highly worth the read.
It’s been twelve years since tragedy struck the senior course of Long Acre High School. Only a few students survived that fateful night—a group the media dubbed The Ones Who Got Away.
Liv Arias thought she’d never return to Long Acre—until a documentary brings her and the other survivors back home. Suddenly her old flame, Finn Dorsey, is closer than ever, and their attraction is still white-hot. When a searing kiss reignites their ardour, Liv realizes this rough-around-the-edges cop might be exactly what she needs…
The Gilded Ones
The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna is $1.99! This is a YA fantasy novel. Maya mentioned this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet and was tempted by the gorgeous cover. Have you read this one?
Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural instinct, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs.
But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity–and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.
Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki–near-immortals with infrequent gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire’s greatest threat.
Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she’s ever known. But as she journeys to the capital to train for the biggest battle of her life, she will discover that the brilliant walled city holds numerous surprises. Nothing and no one are quite what they seem to be–not even Deka herself.
